Basic Magical Herbs Lesson 8

Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Medicinal Uses: Fever, digestion, anxiety

Magical Uses: purification, protection, love

Encyclopedia of 500 Spells lists Basil for business, fertility, psychic powers, money, protection, happy home, travel, and cleansing baths (more on ritual baths HERE).

7 Day Candle Lable from The Vodou Store
Basil Better Business Spells
"Basil is the botanical most associated with attracting wealth and prosperity. Large, fresh, vivid green basil leaves are believed to resemble cash bills. In addition, basil is strongly identified with various spirits of wealth and good fortune. The presence of the botanical beckons these spirits, together with their blessings of prosperity.
Basil belongs to Maitresse Ezili Freda Dahomey, Vodou spirit of luxury and features in many of her rituals."

Basil Spell - New Orleans Better Business and Quick Fix Better Business Formula
"Maitresse Ezili Freda Dahomey emerged in a region of West Africa known either as Dahomey or Benin. Originally a water snake spirit, she traveled with enslaved devotees to the Western hemisphere, taking root in Haiti, where she has achieved great prominence as the pre-eminent female spirit in the Vodoun pantheon. During the journey, Maitresse Ezili shed her snakeskin to emerge as a breathtakingly beautiful lwa of wealth, luxury, dreams, and love...Basil is a major component of New Orleans-style better business formulas, although the original connection to Maitresse Erzili may be overlooked.

1. Shred approximately one half cup of fresh basil leaves.
2. Cover the basil with approximately one mint (560 ml) of boiling water. (Play with proportions to achieve the quantity and intensity you desire).
3. Let the basil steep in this water for three days.
4. On the fourth day, strain out the water and reserve the liquid.

Sprinkle this liquid over the entrances and thresholds of your business, in corners, behind doors and near the cash registers - basically in any spot that might be perceived as vulnerable. It allegedly attracts customers and prevents theft.

There are two methods of creating this quick-fix version. The most preferred is to add twelve drops of essential oil of basil to one pint (560 ml) of water. This isn't as potent as regular New Orleans Better Business Formula but it's fast.

An alternative method is to pour boiling water over one tablespoon of dried basil. Allow it to steep until it cools, then strain and use.

Both Quick Fix solutions lack the visual component of the original spell, too: the soaking basil leaves look a lot like cash. Compensate by adding extra focus and visualization to the spell.

Basil Spell (6) Personal Business Magnet Spell
(I wanted to add this one because my business is wherever I am...though my business is a little less colorful than those featured in this spell, lol)
"Sometimes you are your business. Traditionally prostitutes have bathed in infusions of fresh basil to lure customers towards them, a custom believed to originate in Spain, although it has since traveled around the world. Sex workers aren't the only ones whose prosperity is dependent upon selling themselves. This spell is beneficial for anyone whose business depends upon his or her own personal magnetism.

1. Add strong infusions of fresh basil to your bath together with fresh basil leaves and some basil hydrosol.
2. For extra enhancement, after bathing and air-drying, dust the body lightly with either Lodestone Body Powder or Drawing Powder Personal Dusting Powder (cornstarch and confectioners sugar with basil essential oil)."

redwitch9 shop on Etsy lists their basil with the following points that I felt were wonderfully descriptive:

"Basil For Protection, Love, and Wealth -- Magic Herb

Basil is the dragon plant, bound to fire. It's an herb thought to offer protection, love, prosperity, and wealth. Because basil has a long standing tradition with witchcraft, it's often called "Witches' Herb."
The name basil, may come from the Greek word "basileus", meaning king or from
Latin's "basilicus", dragon. The French call it "herbe royale."

For over 5,000 years basil has been cultivated by man. This popular herb is native to India, Iran, and some tropical areas of Asia. There are many rituals and beliefs associatd with basil. Legend tells of basil growing around Christ's tomb after the resurrection and above the spot where St. Constantine and Helen discovered the holy cross. Jewish folklore suggests it adds strength while fasting. In Europe, basil is placed in the hands of the dead to ensure a safe journey to the afterlife. This is very similar to the Indian tradition of placing basil in the mouth of the dying so they may reach God. Ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks believed it would open the gates of heaven.

Many have considered basil the herb of love. It is said that if a woman puts a pot of basil outside her room, she is ready to receive her suitor. Burn dried, crushed basil while you announce your heart's desire and you should get it. Place basil near the doorway of a business and it will prosper. For protection and purification of home and family, put basil in all four corners of the house and freshen it often."

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Medicinal Uses: helps prevent infection, cold & flu, lung ailments, externally for allergies

Magical Uses: protection, anti-theft, exorcism

Garlic is most well known for its banishing effects on evil, specifically vampires in movies. This could be due to its magical protection properties in spells all over the globe.

The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells lists garlic for its protection properties in spells like the following:

Garlic Anti-Evil Spell (2)
"Combine one head of garlic with an old metal key and a metal depiction of a hand (hamsa, Hand of Fatima, or similar). Place in a window or over the door to provide spiritual protection to those within the house, and to repel evil, malice, and negative enchantment."

Garlic is also a traditional ingredient in protection formulas like Four Theives Vinegar and other protection vinegars like the shown Banishing Vinegar from White Magick Alchemy.
"Use the vinegar to clean door knobs so that negative energies are cleansed and new negativity is halted before it can get into your sacred space. Wash window sills, hands, sprinkle at entryways for protection, add to a bucket of water as a floor wash, cars, offices, its uses are endless. Write your intent or a spell on paper, soak it in the vinegar, then bury it or burn it. Use it to "wash your hands" of bad people, an ex that won't stop bugging you, enemies, people who are draining your energy. Use for cleansing rituals of all kinds, home blessing and clearing rituals, cleanse gemstones and crystals, ritual tools."

May Apple (Podophyllum peltatum)
aka American Mandrake

Medicinal Uses: helps with certain cancer, venereal warts, and planters warts.

Magical Uses: protection, fertility

May apple is listed for poppet magic and in many spells as a substitute for Mandrake, though the two are not scientifically related.

The herb is sold on Herb-Magic store and listed for:
"In Hoodoo and Conjure this AMERICAN MANDRAKE or MAY APPLE ROOT is used in several ways. The stick-like roots are tied and glued to make a twig-doll which, when wrapped around its middle with a paper bearing the Beloved’s name, is used as a Doll-Baby to Win in Love. Likewise, carrying a single root rolled up in paper money and tied is said to conjure Wealth."

Brush Creek Wool Works offers American Mandrake on their Etsy shop saying
"American Mandrake Root is reported and used to have the same magical qualities. It is used in magic rituals and in neopagan religions such as Wicca and Germanic revivalism religions such as Odinism."
